Geographic Information Systems

August 7, 2026

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow us to spatially visualize relationships, patterns, and trends in the world. GIS software is designed to capture, manage, analyze and display all forms of spatial data—from aerial photos and parcel lines to hydrants and transformers—there is something GIS can provide for everyone. GIS provides benefits for organizations of any size.

The Power of Mapping. Utilities require careful planning, able management, and constant maintenance to stay up to date. As a system expands, information may become scattered in a number of locations, making it difficult to access when needed the most. This creates an added strain on staff who may already have their hands full, stalling any plans for further growth.

DGR Engineering offers a smart solution to this problem. GIS allows your system to store all relevant information in one central location, assuring that the most accurate information is readily available whenever the need arises.

GIS Mapping

October 4, 2018

DGR developed an electric GIS mapping system for the City of Madison, South Dakota. The project entailed obtaining high resolution, geo-referenced aerial imagery to serve as a base background to the system.

With the help of City personnel all existing primary distribution lines were identified and located and all existing overhead distribution poles and streetlights were given GPS locations.

Conductors were colored/dashed depending upon phase and number of phases. Conductor sizes and correlating circuits were input into the line sections features.

Meters, transformers, and switches were included along with detailed information such as switch style, meter number, transformer size, and age.
