Client:
Sioux Falls Regional Airport

Sioux Falls, SD

Key Features:

  • Apron flood lighting for air cargo operations
  • Apron flood lighting control system
  • 80-ft. high mast/pole mount floodlight structures

Key Experience:

  • Projects show that luminaries with similar wattage ratings perform very differently depending on optics, photometry, and mounting geometry. Construction must be closely coordinated with air-side operations.
  • Maintenance strategies were a major concern. Utilizing LED light technology improved service life, along with incorporating the LED drivers and controls near ground level to improve turn-around time on maintenance tasks.
  • Importance of stakeholder involvement from the beginning for awareness of the common goal, to set expectations, and to deliver the final product.

Apron Expansion Lighting

DGR Engineering partnered with another firm on this apron expansion lighting project. The goal was to achieve adequate lighting levels for air cargo operations at the expanded cargo apron facilities. High mast/pole heights were required to achieve the recommended luminance on the apron. With high mast pole heights, uniformity, shadow control, and glare control were of great necessity for the air traffic control tower, ground personnel, aircraft in-flight and taxiing on the ground.

LED light technology was utilized to improve energy efficiency, provide a long service life, and reduce maintenance on the high mast/pole mounting heights. Providing adequate lighting for the area was the key aspect of the project to support the ground and air operations of the regional air cargo operator.
