Client:
South Lincoln Rural Water
Beresford, SD
Key Features:
- Iron and manganese removal plant using horizontal pressure filters
- Current capacity of the plant is 4.5 MGD, expandable to 6.0 MGD
- Pressure filters are some of the largest in the world and use five cells, which facilitates in-service backwashing. This allows the plant to keep producing treated water while individual cells of the filter are sequentially backwashed
- Redundant electrical and backup generation systems designed to prevent generator or MCC bus failure in any one building from shutting down the entire treatment facility
- The facility’s electric service feeds redundant automatic transfer switches, feeding redundant motor control & power distribution centers. Parallel 500kW diesel standby generators round out the electrical configuration, which allows operators, in the event of a bus fault or catastrophic failure of any single piece of major electrical gear, to isolate the failed equipment and continue processing and pumping water at near plant capacity while damaged equipment is repaired
Key Experience:
- Constructing new plant at site of existing facility
- Converting existing buildings for use with the new plant
- Designing electrical system redundancy into the plant
New Water Treatment Plant
SLRW has been a trusted provider of safe drinking water for over 40 years, serving more than 2,000 customers across agricultural, residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, including bulk water sales to four communities. Historically, water treatment involved only chlorination due to the high quality of well water.
Increased system demand and the addition of new wells led to elevated iron and manganese levels, exceeding acceptable standards. This necessitated the construction of a new water treatment plant (WTP) to ensure continued compliance and service reliability.
The plant was designed with expansion in mind, including space for additional filters to meet future demand, especially given proximity to the growing Sioux Falls Metro Area. Construction occurred on the site of existing facilities. Strategic reuse of infrastructure minimized disruption and reduced costs.
Electrical system redundancy was built into the design, including separate motor control centers (MCCs) and redundant cabling, minimizing the likelihood of prolonged disruption to plant operations.
DGR Engineering worked closely with SLRW staff and leadership to determine optimal plant capacity and select treatment technologies aligned with operational preferences. The project emphasized long-term sustainability, operational flexibility, and strategic foresight.
The new WTP equips SLRW to meet current and future water quality standards, supports regional growth, and ensures reliable service for decades to come.
