New Water Supply

Ethanol production is an extremely water intensive process; Highwater Ethanol had long struggled with difficult to treat groundwater heavy in iron and hardness, but when the quantity also began to decrease they knew they needed to find another source of water. In 2014 DGR was hired to evaluate various options for this supplementary water source, and discovered Sioux Rock Quarry, several miles southeast of Highwater Ethanol, was discharging high quality rainwater and groundwater leachate directly into the Little Cottonwood River. Though utilizing this water meant constructing a storage lagoon, pump station, ground storage reservoirs, and miles pipe, DGR’s expertise in rural water systems made this not only feasible, but economical and easy to operate.

DGR began design and coordination with state and local agencies to move the project forward. By the Spring of 2015 the project had received all local, regional, and state permits, and construction began April 2015. After completion of the project October 2015 Highwater Ethanol has been seamlessly pulling up to 800 gallons per minute from the quarry to supplement their existing water supply. They are now able to focus their efforts on the production of high-quality ethanol rather than the management of cumbersome, unreliable water systems.
